Thirty-Six Grants Totaling $188,200 Made to Greater North Penn Health and
Human Services Non-profit Organizations
The North Penn Community Health Foundation Board of Directors is pleased
to announce that it awarded thirty-six grants, totaling $188,200 to local
health and human service non-profit organizations in recognition of their
efforts to provide vital services to at-risk members of our community.
Grants ranged in value from $1,000 to nearly $17,000. Organizations were
selected for support because their leadership staff actively supported and
participated in the North Penn Community Health Foundation’s Non-Profit
Academy. The Academy was formed in 2003 and provides leadership training workshops
on a variety of topics. Last year the Academy’s curriculum focused on
business planning skills. Russell Johnson, Executive Director for the Foundation
noted, “Our Greater North Penn residents depend upon these organizations
to help them. Non-profit organizations differ from for-profit businesses because
they are mission-driven and do not make business decisions driven by profit
motives. Yet each non-profit organization must carefully balance the costs
of providing services with the revenues it generates. Determining what services
to provide, who to provide them to, where to provide them and how to staff
them are all considerations with cost implications. When boards develop strategic
plans, the ‘big picture’ is established. But the specific details
and strategies for achieving the desired outcomes rest with the staff. By
developing written business plans, boards, staff and funders have an improved
opportunity to understand the direction and priorities of an organization
and to make prudent investments in their future.”
